WANTED: Classroom Leaders
Upon returning to school, Mrs. Jewell will be hiring students for classroom jobs. Over winter break, your child should review the possible classroom jobs listed below, choose two in which he feels he would excel at, and write a formal letter to Mrs. Jewell. This letter should include the student's qualifications, prior experience, and at least one character reference. An example letter can be found by clicking here.
- Librarian (2) - Responsible for maintenance of bookshelves. Candidates should have excellent organizational skills, demonstrate respectful handling of books, be able to multi-task, and exhibit efficiency. They may be asked to stop working on a classroom assignment to perform their job duties, yet be expected to return to the classroom task and get caught up with ease.
- Morning Do Now Distributer (2) - Responsible for distributing Morning Do Now notebooks. Candidates who are able to arrive at least ten minutes prior to Affirmation will be considered for this position first. They should be able to read the names of all trainees and identify each trainees' seat. In addition, they must demonstrate respectful handling of materials, efficiency, and trustwortiness (as these candidates may be in the classroom when the manager is not always present).
- Math Do Now Distributer (2) - Responsible for distributing Math Do Now notebooks after lunch. Candidates must be strong classroom leaders, demonstrating how to properly leave the lunch room and enter the classroom Ready to Learn. They should be able to read the names of all trinees and identify each trainees' seat. In addition, they must demonstrate respectful handling of materials and efficiency. These candidates will help set the tone for beginning our afternoon in an on-task fashion.
- Desk Duty (1) - Responsible for ensuring the tops of all classrooms desks are clean at the end of the day. At the end of each work day, this candidate will quickly and quietly distribute wet wipes to each trainee, to ensure that desk tops are cleared and cleaned. In addition they may be required to wipe down vacant work stations. Candidates who are skilled at accurately reading analog clocks will be considered first.
- Door Holder (2) - Responsible for holding doors open for others. These candidates would perform their job on their way to and from recess and recess, or other special circumstances. As these candidates will be asked to stand at the front of their class lines, they are expected to be outstanding classroom leaders. They should demonstrate how to stand and walk quietly in a line. They are also courteous of others.
- Caboose (1) - Responsible for ensuring straight, quiet lines, turning off lights, and closing doors when exiting a room. This candidate is an extension of the classroom manager, and should demonstrate outstanding leadership, acting as expected without being told. They are respectful of their peers, and quiet role models.
- Lunch Assistant (2) – Responsible for lunch set up and clean up. These candidates must be strong academic leaders, as they will be excused early from classroom specials to perform their job duties, yet be expected to complete classroom tasks. Candidates must exhibit good hygiene, timeliness, and respect for supervising managers (including lunch and specials managers). Additionally, candidates who are skilled at accurately reading analog clocks will be considered first.
- Materials Manager (1) – Responsible for maintenance of materials shelves (i.e. colored pencils, crayons, scissors, games, etc.). Candidates should have excellent organizational and sorting skills, demonstrate respectful handling of classroom materials, and understand appropriate times to perform job tasks. They are also respectful of their peers, as the job site is in close proximity to other trainees’ work stations.
- Alphabetizer (1) – Responsible for alphabetizing assignments that are collected or turned in. While this candidate should excel at alphabetizing, students will be required to put their student number in all complete headings which will assist the Alphabetizer. Candidate may be asked to collect trainees’ papers, and should be efficient and respectful of others’ work.
- Floor Supervisor (AM & PM) – Responsible for helping keep our classroom floor tidy. These candidates should be role models in organization and cleanliness by not only ensuring that our classroom floor is kept tidy and free of debris, but also by maintaining their own tidy desk and work station.
- Table Leader (5) – Responsible for leading table members by positive role modeling. Candidate should model active listening, on-task behavior, and above all – respect.
- Pencil Sharpener (1) – Responsible for sharpening pencils. This job is only to be performed before or after school, so as not to disrupt the quiet, learning environment. All other pencil sharpening will be done by the classroom manager.
- Uniform Checker (1) – Responsible for ensuring peers’ uniforms adhere to dress code (i.e. shirts tucked in, jackets/hats/gloves off when inside). This candidate should adhere to the school dress code himself. When reminding peers to check their uniform, does so in a respectful and courteous manner.
- Messenger (1) – Reports to the classroom manager. Tasks may vary but may include sending messages to other managers. This candidate display outstanding respect, responsibility, and citizenship.
- Security Guard (1) – Responsible for ensuring all building doors are secure at the end of the day. This candidate should be familiar with (or is willing to learn) which doors to check and how to secure each. In addition, he needs to be proactive in cleaning up his work space so that he can perform his job duties in a timely and non-disruptive manner.
- Recycler (1) – Responsible for ensuring that recycling bin contains recyclables only, and that peers are properly using recycling bin. Candidate must be able to: identify what materials can be recycled and what cannot; dispose of or take care of items in recycling bin that do not belong; respectfully help peers use the recycling bin the correct way.
